Let’s Make History!

A new play and accompanying historical workshop activities created in collaboration with primary school children in Suffolk, based on Anglo-Saxon history.

What was the project?

  • We worked with 128 key stage 2 students in our co-creation workshops. They gave us creative ideas for the play and helped us understand what aspects of the history interested them.

  • We worked with 12 brilliant volunteers who gave us 287 hours of their time. 50% completed their Level 1 Makaton training, and 67% told us they felt they have a good understanding of Anglo-Saxon history as a result of participating.

  • Using the children's ideas and our own research we created a new play called 'Tangled with the Angles'. We performed it 21 time across 10 primary schools and 4 community venues in Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. It was attended by 1142 people.

  • Our Heritage Officer and volunteers ran Anglo-Saxon craft workshops. 792 children participated, making clay pots, braiding belts, crafting jewellery and excavating 'poo'!

  • 69% of teachers told us the event had levelled-up learning for their SEN students by removing stressful barriers.
