The Flashpoint Project
Conflict Resolution through Drama
Created in 2004 by
spinning Wheel theatre Artistic Director Georgia Bance with The Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds, The Flashpoint Project’s aims are:
• To introduce disruptive and under-confident students to a process of conflict management using drama techniques
• To increase students' self esteem and confidence
Over one week students take part in activities ranging from Forum Theatre to stage combat.
High school students explore conflict in the story of Romeo and Juliet, primary children look at the story of Robin Hood. Both are introduced through live performance.
Having analysed the behaviour and conflicts of characters in the story, the students workshop ideas for alternative decisions and behaviours characters could employ for resolution to their conflicts.
The same process is then applied to conflicts in the students' own lives and communities.
The Flashpoint Project has already worked with 300 students:
“I judge the success or failure of something like this on the kids’ perception; the response has been very, very positive, absolutely spot on, I’d recommend it to any school wishing to participate.” (Portsmouth schoolteacher: Head of Year 8/9)
